Five Increase Questions with Andy Pettitte

With the Yankees making the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2012, it’s a good time to hear from one of the best left-handers in Yankee history and one of the most dominant pitchers in postseason history.

In Andy’s 18-year career (15 with the Yankees) he won 256 regular season games and 18 post-season games (First on the All-Time list).  He also ranks first in games started (44), innings pitched (276) and has won seven World Championships in Yankee pinstripes.

Many know his stats, but how many know that he came to know the Lord at 11 years old? Here is a bit of his story, brought to you by The Increase:

What effect does your faith have on your lifestyle?

Jesus Christ is the center of my life, and the center of my family. Our faith in Jesus affects everything we do. I’m blessed to be surrounded by a community of believers in my church, and my family and I are very involved there. My wife and I also love having daily Bible studies for our kids in our home so we can all grow closer to Him together. We are definitely not perfect, but we try to always put Christ first.

Describe how your Journey with Christ began.

I first met Jesus when I was 11 years old. My older sister invited me to go to church with her and her friend, and for the first time I heard that I could have a relationship with Jesus Christ. This changed my life. Ever since then, with the Holy Spirit inside of me, I’ve been drawing closer to Christ. That day, my sister and I accepted Jesus and then we went home to tell our parents they needed to come to church with us and they soon too accepted Jesus into their lives.

Who have been the mentors in your life? How did God bring these people into your life?

God has really put a ton of wonderful men and women in my life who have impacted me. Although my parents became believers after my sister and I did, they have since been huge influencers on me in their faith in Christ. My father-in-law, who was also my pastor as I was growing up, along with his three sons have also had a huge impact on my walk with Christ. They exemplify Jesus and challenge me to do the same.

God brought another great mentor into my life when I was drafted by the New York Yankees and sent to Tampa, Florida for training. I immediately sought out a church family and God brought me to meet Pastor Ken Whitten. This man really poured into my life and has been a great mentor and friend to me ever since.

What does the Increase of Christ mean to you?

This is really my daily focus. I really aim to be faithful in prayer and reading God’s Word so that Christ may increase in my life and I can become more like Him. When I do this, I want to decrease so that He will increase. I want my eyes to be open to be like Him. As a husband and dad, I have a huge responsibility to lead my family to do the same. I love this job and I try to be a good example for them in this.

What is your life verse and why?

For the last 8-9 years, I’ve really focused on James 4.6 which says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” I consider this my life verse because I know that God wants us all to be humble and show grace to others. That is my focus. Plus, 46 was my number during my baseball career.
