When I was just starting off in my role as the baseball wife, I remember I just didn’t know what to do. When Matt had a hard day, or a good day, what was I supposed to say? I remember calling my brother-in-law, Josh, who is a baseball coach, and he told me that all I needed to do was to provide a place that Matt wanted to come home to—a place that was consistent. He needed a know that there was one place where he is loved and can be himself, where he doesn’t have to perform. Matt didn’t need me to be another coach, critic, or a psychiatrist, he wanted to be with me for me. Realizing these truths was a game changer for our marriage and for our family.
I’ve been married to Matt for 15 years now, I’ve been with him in baseball for 17—I know what it’s like to live the baseball life. When Matt and I got married, I was a new believer and had the blessing of having many Christian mentors come into my life through the minor leagues. As I look back at that time in my life, I see what a blessing each one of them was. For the past couple years I have been getting more involved in the baseball chapels for the women and through this I have really developed a passion for women’s ministry in the world of baseball.
Matt’s career as a pro baseball player is now routine for us, but it wasn’t always. I remember what it was like to go from life in a sorority house to life in a host family’s basement in a new city. I remember the struggles and frustrations of the early days and I remember those that helped me pursue God in the midst of it. I want to be one of those people for the young women in baseball today. While I still have a lot to learn, I know that I also have a lot to offer these young women. Over time, as we seek and grow closer to God, we become more confident in our identity in Him and the life that He’s called us to. We need to trust in Him and learn from those that He puts in our lives. I’m learning to be diligent in the process of seeking the Lord no matter what area of life that I’m in or what struggle I might be going through. Jesus has been the hope that has anchored my soul in every city we’ve moved to and every season that we’ve gone through. Looking back at where I was in the beginning and where I am now is really sweet because I can see God’s hand working in and through me for His purpose—I want other baseball wives to experience this as well.
I understand what it’s like to be the baseball girlfriend, the baseball wife in both the minor and major leagues, as well as the mom of four kids. In each stage of my life, I have found that it’s not about settling for where you are and just accepting the hardships that come, it’s about changing your perspective a little to work through the struggles and grow closer to Christ in the midst of them.
“Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love Me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and We will go to them and make Our home with them.’” -John 14:23
In our home we laugh a lot, we eat meals together, we fellowship together, and there’s a lot of discipline that goes on—a lot of life happens in the home. In John 14, Jesus says that He is coming with the Holy Spirit to make a home in us! What an incredible reality we live in; we have daily fellowship with the Spirit of God who lives within us. Each morning as I wake up I pray that I would say “yes” to whatever God has for me that day; I want to live open-handed and available for Him to use for His purpose. As I am in constant fellowship with my husband and kids in my home, so I want to be in constant fellowship with Him.
It’s really neat how you never quit learning, especially when it comes to God. I love learning about Him and His Word, and I will never know everything there is. I’m so humbled as He teaches me more about His love every day.
