Having a platform to share my faith in Christ is extremely important to me—it’s the very reason that I play football. The only reason that God has blessed me with the love and talent for football is to bring Him glory, and that’s not only meant for when I’m playing games, but when I’m practicing and preparing as well.
Anyone who competes in sports knows that the preparation period isn’t always the most fun but it’s extremely necessary. Whether I’m studying our opponent before each game, practicing with my teammates, or preparing on my own, I want to do my best as a way to honor God and glorify Him with my work. This takes a lot of discipline but my faith in God really helps me to stay focused. There’s a way show what God is doing in your life, and how good He is, by the way you approach every situation in life, even the ones that aren’t that enjoyable.
I’ve grown a lot in my own faith since the time I entered the NFL. Through events and situations which on the surface looked really unfortunate, such as injuries, being cut, or needing to take a year off, I’ve been able to use that time to grow in my faith and dependence on God. He even has used these times to help me gain insight about life outside of football—other hobbies I now have. In fact, it was when I was forced to take a year off of football that I met my wife, Aleah. Our relationship has continued to strengthen because of that time and other challenges God has brought us through together.
There was one specific time in my football career when I thought to myself, “It would take a miracle to move forward after this.” That moment happened when I was just coming out of having ACL surgery. Going into it I didn’t realize what I major procedure it was. After the surgery, my knee was huge…it didn’t look good, and I felt so discouraged. Thankfully, Aleah was there for me during this time. She really encouraged me and acted as my crutch, both physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’m so grateful that she was there to point me back to God, helping me to trust in and lean on Him. That was a really big step in my faith in Christ, as I realized that He always is and always will be there for me.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” -Psalm 46:1
When I’m able to look back at these times, I continually realize that God has a story for me in all of this. Every situation that we go through, God is preparing us for a great story to tell to bring glory to His name.
