What effect does your faith have on your lifestyle?

It has a huge effect on my life. When I wake up in the morning and put my feet on the ground, I know I have a purpose — a purpose to live for Him. At the gym, when we are joking around and afterward I ask myself if I’m supposed to be acting like that as an image bearer of Christ, I know that is the Holy Spirit inside of me. God has given me this platform in baseball and it is a great one. He has given it to me so I can praise His name — to bring glory to His name for what He’s done for me.

Describe how your Journey with Christ began.

I grew up in a divided home. My parents were divorced when I was 12 years old. I remember thinking that as long as I’m not saying or doing bad things, I would be OK. I was a so-called “Christian” because my parents used to go to church.  When my dad passed away in 2012, it hit me hard. I was in Double-A and he passed away during my spring training. My grandmother wrote me a letter that I read during that time which included some verses. When I read those, I heard God speak to me. I understood that though my earthly father was gone, my Heavenly Father would never leave me. That sense of peace was so great; He was there for me when I needed Him. I recommitted my life to Him and understood that Christianity wasn’t about what I did, but about my relationship with Jesus Christ. He loved me regardless of my past, present or future.  In 2012, I began living for Jesus. In 2013, I met my future wife, who grew up in the Church. Our values as Christians matched up and she really impacted my own journey of faith.

Who have been the mentors in your life? How did God bring these people into your life?

My wife is No. 1. My grandmother was another one when I was little; she was the one who introduced me to Jesus. There have also been a couple of chaplains I’ve been honored to be shepherded by. I can share anything with them and they’ll encourage me with honesty. These people whom God has brought into my life have been huge for me.

What does the Increase of Christ mean to you?

It’s a daily thing. It’s not about decreasing myself in a bad way, but being more selfless and implementing His values over what I think is right. It’s about putting Him above things I personally might desire, knowing that while those things may be good, God has so much more to offer.

What is your life verse and why?

Proverbs 16:9 is a verse I read all the time. It says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” The baseball journey is not the easiest one. I’ve been through every step of the minor leagues, even getting sent back to Double-A after being in Triple-A the previous season, before finally getting called up to the majors. It can be rough at times, but I know that God is always in control.
