Courage to Come - LaMorris Crawford

“The boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out for fear.

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.’And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’ So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” —Matthew 14:24-29

“Come.” Have you ever wondered how Peter heard the words of Jesus so clearly? Verse 24 says that the boat was being tossed by the waves and the winds were contrary. That word “contrary” carries the meaning “to be opposite.” In other words, the wind on the sea that day was blowing opposite of where it normally does.

As fishermen by trade, this would have thrown the disciples for quite a loop! This verse also reveals to us that the boat was being tossed. All of this is going on and then suddenly Jesus appears, walking towards the disciples. These brothers thought they were seeing a ghost. Fear entered that boat at an alarming rate!

Here we see crazy winds blowing, the boat being tossed, and the spirit of fear overcoming everyone in the boat. Yet Peter heard the word of Jesus with clarity: “Come.”

There is a valuable lesson in this story for us. It does not matter what’s going on around us, or even what’s happening in our hearts or minds, we are to focus intently on the Word of God. It is the Word that gives clarity to our lives and within our hearts.

In the book of Psalms, David penned the words:

“Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” —Psalm 119:105

Light at your feet helps you see with clarity where not to step and the light on the path reveals what is ahead of you. When light is present everything is clear! But darkness cannot reveal anything.

Though it was chaotic on the sea that day, Peter could step out on the sea by faith because he heard the word of God. I encourage you to make His Word a priority in your life. When you do, you will have clarity to walk through whatever storm may come.
