We were able to sit down with Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback Derek Carr to talk about how he is living in the increase of Christ. He shares about his faith journey and the mentors that have been in his life.
What effect does your faith have on your lifestyle?
My faith is my life so it affects every aspect of how I go about my day. From prayer, to worship, to how I interact with teammates, coaches, my wife and family — everything is affected by my faith. I believe if you truly believe in Jesus Christ and are a true follower of Him, every part of your life should be a reflection of how Christ lived His life and the enormous sacrifices He made for us.
How did your journey with Christ begin?
My grandfather was a preacher, so Christ has always been a part of my journey. My parents were very consistent with the way they raised their three boys. Every Sunday we were expected to worship, even if there was a sporting event. During my last years in high school and my first year in college, I started to stray from Christ. When I met my wife, Heather, I started to get back on the right path and realize all the enormous gifts I have been given. Christ has always been with me, and I just needed to understand that to get back on that journey.
Who have been the mentors in your life? How did God bring these people into your life?
My family, my coaches, and especially my older brother, David, have all been great mentors to me. Also, Lorne Bell, a rep for FCA in Fresno County, has been instrumental in helping me find my way back to Christ. Ever since we met, he has been a source of inspiration for me. I am blessed to be surrounded by incredible family and friends who genuinely care about my well being. Christ loves all of us, so I know He is a big part of why these special people are in my life.
What does the Increase of Christ mean to you?
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30
To me this means that I must glorify Christ in every aspect of my life. Whether it is on the football field, at the grocery store, or showing respect to a co-worker, I always need to lift Christ up by mirroring His image in my everyday life.
What is your life verse and why?
“If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” — Psalm 91:9-11
This is my life verse because as long as you allow Christ in your life, you will be protected. The most important thing to me is knowing that I have Christ in my heart and my mind. He is my protection for whatever may come in life.
