Five Increase Questions with Seneca Wallace

We were able to sit down with former NFL quarterback, Seneca Wallace, to talk about how he is living in the increase of Christ, his faith journey and the mentors that have been in his life. Here’s what he had to say.

What effect does your faith have on your lifestyle?

Faith is huge. Having faith in God has really helped shape me to be who I am and has helped me through all the ups and downs in the NFL. The percentages were against me. There was a lot that I had to deal with in life and I had gone through a lot growing up. I didn’t know who my real father was and the only father figure I did have did not teach me the right things about what it meant to be a husband and father. When I had the opportunity to be around strong men of faith in the NFL, my life was changed.

Describe how your Journey with Christ began.

I grew up with my mom’s wonderful example of faith in God. Being a part of a large Baptist family from Texas, our background was very rooted in the Lord. Through the example of my family, I grew stronger and stronger in my faith. In 1998, when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, my had to rely on my faith in God. My Uncle Gary was really there for us and always prayed for us. I saw how strong his and my mom’s faith was and that was really powerful. There were plenty of times that I wanted to give up my faith but I knew that no matter what my mom went through, which was much harder than what I was going through, she never gave up on the Lord. I couldn’t either.

Who have been the mentors in your life? How did God bring these people into your life?

When I was in college, I was around people who were believers but my faith in God didn’t really hit home for me until I came around certain men in the NFL. Being drafted by Seattle, Matt Hasselbeck and Trent Dilfer were really influential for me. When I was around these strong men of faith, I began to grow in my own faith. In Cleveland, I continued to grow as I became close with Ben Watson and Reggie Hodges. These guys were more my age and had gone through what I was going through. We were able to relate more with each other and build each other up. These men were strong on the football field but even stronger in their faith. They really taught me that we wouldn’t be on this football field if it wasn’t for the man upstairs. The community at PAO, and the conferences and teaching we’ve recieved, has also been very influential for me and my wife. We are so thankful for the influence and encouragement that we’ve received in this community.

What does the Increase of Christ mean to you?

There would be no peace in life without Christ. With all the stuff that is going on in our society and culture today, there’s such a need for Christ to increase. Everyone has their own beliefs, and everyone goes about life differently but there’s only one God. The increase of Christ comes when we increase our faith in Him and stay in God’s Word. This puts everything in perspective. If only our country would revery back to faith in Christ, we would flourish more as a society and nation. We can’t do anything without Him.

What is your life verse and why?

Exodus 23:20 says, “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” This verse is written on my chest and it is there for my mom. I applies to those strong believers and influential people of faith that we have leaned on in the past. This points to the One that we seek and rely on. I know that I’ll be with my mom again one day in Heaven where there is peace and love. This verse hits home for me because my mom was my angel and my rock. I know she is up in Heaven with Jesus, looking down on me.
