We were able to sit down with former MLB player, Brett Carroll, and talk about how he is living in the Increase of Christ, his Faith journey and the mentors that have been in his life. Here’s what he had to say.
What’s effect does your faith have on your lifestyle?
Since I’ve become a Christ-follower, I’ve increasingly had a hunger and excitement to know God and experience His work in my life. I can turn to Him in any situation. In my daily life, I want to be a good steward with what He has blessed me with and wherever He calls me. I want to be who He calls me to be so that others can see my faith in Him.
Describe how your Journey with Christ began:
I prayed the prayer to accept Jesus into my life at age 10 when my best friend’s dad told me about Jesus. For a long time though, I viewed God as a judgmental father and I was running from Him more than I was running to Him. My view of Christianity was based on morality. As my baseball career was really beginning to take off, I felt a deeper need for purpose. The outside of my life was looking great but the inside was broken. I suddenly had everything that I dreamed of as a boy, but I was empty. So I opened a Bible for the first time at age 23 and immediately read Psalm 37.4 which says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” That verse came to life and it broke me. From that day on I have been aiming each day to live for Christ.
Who have been the mentors in your life? How did God bring these people into your life?
Jimmy Pitkanen, my childhood best friend’s dad, has been in my life since I was 4 years old. He led me to Christ when I was ten and I still meet with him regularly as a mentor to this day. He was the first good father figure that I had in my life. As a former Tennis Pro, he now coaches kids tennis in a way that points to Christ. This inspires me to do the same for the kids that I coach in baseball.
What does the Increase of Christ mean to you?
Living for Christ is about dying to self. That sounds hard, and it is, but it’s so much more fulfilling to see God work in and through you when you surrender to Him! I believe that we are all created with the desire to be a part of something greater, it’s in our DNA. One of the things I miss about playing ball is the glory that you get on the field. Being able to decrease and allow Christ to increase is even more fulfilling! It’s the most amazing opportunity to be part of a greater and eternal mission.
What is your life verse and why?
Psalm 37.4, which I mentioned early, brought me to my knees and helped me surrender my life to Christ. Along with that, my life verse would have to be Galatians 2.20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God.” This is my everyday goal as a follower of Christ.
