In His Name

Professional Baseball center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Andrew McCutchen saw his dream of playing in the major leagues come true in 2005 when the Pirates called him up as a first round draft pick. While baseball has been a passion of his since he was a young boy, Andrew places his hope and satisfaction in something much greater: his faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ.

“My parents always taught me about Jesus but they left it up to me to take the next step,” says Andrew.

And he did take that next step to trust in Jesus Christ as his savior as a young child. But with a love for baseball, he thought his identity would be found in this game.

When Andrew experienced a period of doubt and insecurity in the major leagues, he fought hard to prove his worth on the field. As he began to thrive as a player, he found that this wasn’t where he found his true identity and satisfaction. Then a day came when he surrendered it all to God.

“It got to a point where I got on my knees,” he remembers, “and told God, ‘I submit, I give it to You. I know baseball doesn’t rule me. If I didn’t have baseball, I know that I’d still have You. I love this game of baseball that You’ve given me but I know that as quickly as You’ve given this to me just as quickly You can take it away. But what cannot be taken away from me is my love for You and Your love for me.”

From that day on Andrew was playing for a different audience—an audience of One.

“He opened my eyes,” Andrew says. “I was no longer going out there just to perform, I was going out there to play in His Name. I was going out there to make a difference in His Name.”

That year he led the Pirates into the 2013 playoffs and was awarded the National League MVP award.

“He is everything that I could ever need or ever want,” Andrew says. “Playoffs or not, MVP or not, I know what I stand for and I know what I believe in.”

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” -John 11:25-26
