Many times, when things deviate from the plan, it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Josh McCown, starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, always dreamed of his ideal NFL career. He pictured himself playing for one city throughout his whole career, just like John Elway and Dan Marino did. However, things did not turn out that way.
After spending four years in Arizona, Josh went to Detroit for just one season before being traded to Oakland. And after Oakland, he went to Miami, followed by a stint in Carolina. While with Carolina, Josh was put on Injured Reserve and did not receive a call during the following offseason.
“That was the first time that had happened to us,” Josh reflected. “My prayer and my desire was just to be back in a locker room. So I went through that whole offseason, and again, the phone didn’t ring, so I said, ‘You know what? I’ve got to do something besides just sit on my hands and wait, and I need to get out there and serve.’”
Josh decided to serve as a volunteer football coach at a local high school. From there his story took another unexpected turn.
“Sadly, we got beat in the playoffs in the second round,” remembers Josh, “so the guys’ season ended there. A week went by, and Jay Cutler of the Bears got hurt.”
Josh learned through this season that God’s call is to follow Him daily. He continually seeks to respond with obedience to that call.
“Jesus said unto them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him.” —Matthew 4.19-20
