Every quarterback studies his playbook. Matt Hasselbeck is, of course, no different. Matt was first drafted by the Green Bay Packers and after three years, he was traded to Seattle. It was with Seattle Seahawks where he was first given the chance as a starting quarterback. More than that, it was in this season of life, under the influence of other Seahawks, where Matt found a new understanding of who Christ is and how to trust Him.
Matt acknowledges that his faith in Jesus Christ didn’t really blossom until he met quarterback Trent Dilfer, former teammate of Matt’s, while he was playing with the Seattle Seahawks.
“He was a little churchy for me,” Matt says with a wry smile. “I was a little suspicious. I came to find out through years of being with him, and seeing him go through things in his life, he’s legit. He’s a good friend and a great teammate.”
Trent and Matt started going to Bible studies together. It wasn’t until a brief but important discussion with Trent in an elevator that Matt realized sharing his faith and teaching others about it is no different from teaching the playbook.
Since this realization, Matt has discovered a passion for spend time with young quarterbacks. Matt loves teaching theses athletes the team’s plays and progressions, but he also sees this as a chance to pour into them and share his faith in God with them, as Trent once did for him.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray that to the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth laborers into His harvest.” – Matthew 9.37-38
