New Orleans Saints quarterback, Luke McCown, grew up in the game of football. On and off the football field, Luke has always enjoyed making game plans. Then came a day that he had never prepared himself for. When Luke’s 4 month old son, Elijah, suddenly developed a brain tumor, Luke found himself without a plan.
At this point, all he could do was trust that God had a plan. When the doctors returned from the surgery room with good news, Luke knew God was in control.
“Suddenly football didn’t matter,” remembers Luke fighting back the tears, “It didn’t matter if I starter, backup or number three. My son was going to be ok.”
The next day, Luke received his first call to as the starting quarterback in the NFL. With eight seconds to go in the game, he made a touchdown pass to win the game.
“I played the game of my career,” says Luke with a smile on his face. “I think I was able to play that freely because of all that I was experiencing. When you go through someone like that, it puts life in perspective.”
Through his child’s sickness, coaches’ trades, and many other of life’s unexpected turns, Luke has learned to gain perspective on what is important and to trust in God’s plan for his life.
“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” – Proverbs 16.9
“It’s God’s power in and around our lives that move us and point us in a direction and make us who He wants us to be. He’s directing those steps. It’s His plan not mine. He’s the One in control.”
