This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Home Plate event in Detroit. It began when a local pastor had a vision to impact youth with the Gospel using the platform of Major League Baseball. On the morning of a 1987 game Tigers pitcher, Frank Tanana, shared his testimony and presented the Gospel to a group of 1,030 youths. To this day the event continues to impact thousands each year as players and fans gather to celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ.
Eventually the vision caught on; thirteen years ago, the non-profit ministry, Third Coast Sports partnered with minor league baseball teams to create a night focused on the Christian faith in the world of baseball. On “Faith Night” a Christian concert would precede or follow the game and players would present testimonies of their faith in Jesus Christ. In 2006, Faith Night spread to the major leagues and is a highly-anticipated yearly event in many MLB teams’ schedules to this day.
This year, thirteen MLB teams are hosting Faith Nights as a time for fans and players to join in Christian worship and outreach. Each night will feature different players and some will have Christian artists performing and representing their faith in Jesus Christ. See below for a full guide to this year’s MLB Faith Nights.
Celebrating 30 years, HOME PLATE is an annual outreach event held at Comerica Park at which current and former members of the Detroit Tigers, along with other professional athletes, share about their careers as professional athletes and their faith in Jesus Christ.
