My Story: Demario Davis

Demario Davis is a regular contributor to The Increase and will be providing monthly articles and opinions.

My Platform:

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” —2 Timothy 2:2

I was a guy headed in the wrong direction fast, and God radically changed me. I get to play this wonderful game of football and I’m blessed to do it but my life is so much more than that in God. That’s what I really want people to know about me.

Since becoming a Christian in 2008, I’ve always known the importance of sharing my testimony with others and I’ve done it in a lot of different ways, but I’ve never had a platform to share my story with the world. I want to be a voice on The Increase because it’s great place for athletes to share who they really are with a mass audience. Instead of talking to one church, team, or youth group at a time, I can share it with everyone. Sometimes people need to hear your whole testimony and sometimes they just need to hear about something that you were struggling through and have overcome by the power of Jesus. This is a place where I can be that voice.

Who God is to Me:

God has been revealing His true nature and majesty to me more and more. The way I approach the throne of God and how I spend time with Him is really important. This mindset and view of God needs to break through in my worship as well. I want to pursue Him with purpose, perseverance, and passion and that’s going to show up in the way that I praise Him and show Him to others. After all, why would people get fired up about a God I’m not fired up about? How can I be fired up about a God that I don’t spend time with? I don’t want to worship or share God causally; we are talking about a God who’s anything but casual.

My Eternal Calling:

Through the teaching of Randy Alcorn, God has made heaven more real to me this year. Understanding what heaven is makes my time on earth so much more precious and valuable because how I live life on this earth symbolizes how I want to live for eternity in heaven—the renewed earth. I need to ask myself, “How do I want to store up treasures here on earth?” What I do here on earth is not in vain, it’s for the Lord and it’s also storing up blessings for me for later. This has changed my thinking about how I serve God and others. Instead of thinking, “God has commanded me to give this much, so that’s what I’ll give,” I should be thinking how much can I give because I should give as much as I can of myself for Him.

Often as Americans we are looking up—trying to move up in the world. But we often fail to look down and see those who are struggling. We are called to reach out to those who are not as fortunate as we are. This really encouraged me in my faith and understanding the generosity of servanthood of Christ.

This Season:

This is the first off-season that I’ve had in my career when don’t know what is about to happen; my contract is up and I’m a free agent. I’m doing a lot of praying and fasting but also enjoying this time with my kids and family while training for next season. We don’t know where we’ll be next, but we are praying and trusting God to provide and care for us. Though it feels like a time of transition, we are standing on the rock of God. At the end of the day we want His will for our lives, not ours.
