The Greatest Story - Eddie Taubensee

A story is a message that tells the particulars of an act or occurrence of events. We all have a story of the events that have shaped us into who we are and what we’re all about. The Baseball Hall of Fame just inducted Mike Piazza and Ken Griffey Jr. into that hallowed group of the best of the best who ever played the game. It’s great to listen to the personal stories of how their careers began followed by every step of the journey they took—the good and bad times—to get them to where they are now. I truly enjoy listening to the stories of these men, not just because one was my teammate and I competed against the other as a fellow catcher, but also because they each had something in their stories that we could be encouraged and inspired by.

Each person’s story is unique. Our stories have many chapters in them with pages yet to be written. Psalm 19:1-6 is the beginning of a great story, giving us a glimpse of who God is:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.” —Psalm 19:1-6

This great passage tells us how God’s glory is revealed in the handiwork of His creation.  “The heavens are telling of the glory of God…Day after day they pour forth speech…He has pitched a tent for the sun…” There’s a lot that could be unpacked from this passage, but the point I want to focus on is that we can know there is a good, gracious, powerful, loving, creative God who has given us life and a place to live it. When we read this, we naturally want to find out the rest of the story. And that’s exactly what we will find when we read the pages of God’s Word.

Scripture reveals God’s story and mission from the very beginning. It’s here that we see God reveal how He created us to know Him and reflect His character. We see the enemy convince man to write his own story, instead of letting God write it. We see God’s mission all along and that He never stops pursuing us even when we rebel against Him. Ultimately, we see that God’s story is all about Jesus.

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” —2 Corinthians 5:21

Each of us has a story; some may seem more exciting and interesting than others. But the good news is that we can all be a part of God’s story and partake in it with Him. Because His story is the greatest story we could ever tell.

Who is the author of your story? God’s story has been set since the beginning of time and yet it still has events to be acted out. Will you consider living under God’s story through His son, Jesus Christ, and let Him finish the pages left in your personal book? God can and will use you to inspire and encourage others as you tell of the glory of God through your life.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” —Romans 10:9
